You’ve been learning and applying search engine optimisation techniques for some time now. You now understand so much more about how seo works. You do not class yourself as an expert by any means but you are learning a lot.

SEO is a complex subject and there are so many different elements that you need to learn and also to implement. May of these elements have a contextual relationship with others. That means how you optimise one element needs to be done in a way that takes into consideration of other elements.

We have two broad areas of seo. We have on page seo and off page seo. Both of them are important and both need each other in order to rank the highest in Google’s search engine.

Today we will briefly talk about “Anchor Text”.

So what is “Anchor Text”?

It’s basically the wording or text contained in a hyperlink. If we have a link on a page that reads “seo company” then the Anchor Text is ‘seo company’. The idea behind this is you are telling the search engines what the page is about that you are linking to and you do this using Anchor Text.

Anchor Text applies to links pointing to a page externally but also internally. It helps search engine spiders determine what a destination page is about. So links with the Anchor Text of company should point to a page about a seo company.

Why is this important?

In SEO we want our designated pages to rank for specific keywords. Once we have correctly carried out our on page optimisation and based that around our keywords, we ideally want to the links that point to that page to contain our keywords. This will boost the relevancy for that page based on what our collective Anchor Text says.

Now if you havre 10 links pointing to your ranking page, you do not want them all to have the Anchor Text of your keyword. This brings up the topic of “over optimisation” which can cause your webpages or website to not move up in the search engines.

When we are talking about over optimisation of Anchor Text, both external and internal links need to be taken into consideration. You want to be aggressive with your Anchor Text but not to over do it.

Anchor Text optimisation can also be affected by the domain name, meta title of a linking page as well as the on page seo of the ranking page the links point to.

So, it is best to have a good understanding of the links you have pointing to your page, document them then you can plan out you future Anchor Text optimisation.
